It’s Monday morning. Bill feels like he’s done a days work already as the youngest thinks 5am is get up and go time. He kisses the wife goodbye, drives to work. He is welcomed by Matt on reception who politely asks if he would like a coffee. Strong, no sugar. Bill gets to his desk, pulls the laptop out, checks Facebook, Twitter, Sky News (don’t pretend you do otherwise) and realises he’s got to get “that” financial report over to his biggest client this morning. Bill sighs, shuts down Twitter and cracks on with the final parts of the report.
Sounds like a mediocre morning at most offices, yeah?
What Bill didn’t realise is that whilst he made small talk with Matt about the unusually cold weather we’ve been experiencing in March, his superhero IT company (hello, that’s us) were working tirelessly behind the scenes ensuring his server didn’t go offline following a disc space issue. Through a little something called Proactive Monitoring, our IT professionals were alerted to lurking danger well before it could pose a catastrophic impact on Bill’s business.
Proactive Monitoring, what is this?
“Tell us more!” we hear you cry! Well, *takes breath* a piece of software sits on your server and regularly reports updates as well as going “crazy mental” when a potential issue is lurking. Without boring you with techy babble, we install a small agent that is configured to monitor a set of ‘checks’ that are defined by us. The software will report at regular intervals and will alert us to any issues based on the definitions we have set up. By doing so, we are able solve problems before they become major incidents (such as Bill’s client firing him for not sending over that really, really, really important financial report he’d promised).
Apart from proactive monitoring being like a first defense cold spray for the IT world, it is also super-duper easy to set up, taking roughly 10 minutes to fully install the required software. Proactive monitoring is the eyes and ears you can’t always be. It’s always on. Watching, checking, reporting.
